Bath Renovation!
Bringing the Outdoors In: Our Cabin Bathroom Transformation
When we bought this cabin, the bathroom was dated, cramped, and lacked functionality. We wanted to transform it into a refreshing, nature-inspired space that felt like an outdoor shower brought indoors. Here’s how we made that vision a reality—challenges, tips, and all!
Tackling the Challenges of a Dated Bathroom
Our first task was to address the space constraints and outdated design. We had a clear vision: create an indoor bathroom that captures the feeling of being outdoors, with privacy but without the need for shades or curtains that would block the immersive vibe.
Demo Day: A Fresh Start
To make way for this transformation, we started from scratch. We pulled out the sledgehammers and got to work demolishing the old bathroom. Sometimes, a complete reset is the best way to tackle functionality issues, and that was definitely true here.
We also decided to expand the space by taking about three feet from an adjacent room. This gave us much more flexibility in layout and allowed for a more open, functional design.
Designing the Heart of the Space: A Walk-In Shower with a View
The centerpiece of our bathroom is a large, walk-in shower. When I first showed my contractor the outline, he thought I was a bit crazy! But I had a clear idea of what I wanted—a spacious, doorless shower that would feel open and natural.
To achieve that outdoor feel, I added a transom window, which lets in natural light without sacrificing privacy. It was the perfect way to bring the outside in and make the space feel airy and bright.
Natural Elements: Pebble Floor and Open Concept
We chose a pebble floor for the shower, adding texture and an organic touch. The open concept, without a door, enhances that free, outdoor vibe, while a custom glass panel provides just the right amount of enclosure.
Pro Tip: Avoid extending glass panels to the ceiling; it helps with ventilation and reduces moisture buildup. Also, try applying Rain-X to the glass—it makes maintenance much easier. A monthly reapplication keeps the glass looking fresh and clear. Don’t forget to seal your tiles to protect them from moisture; it’s worth the extra effort! https://amzn.to/4fjiF4g
Salvaging Character: An Old High-Back Sink
In keeping with the rustic, nature-inspired design, we repurposed a high-back sink salvaged from an old barn. It adds vintage charm to the bathroom and aligns beautifully with our cabin’s character.
Quick Tip: If you’re using a salvaged sink, make sure it includes the original wall-mount brackets. They’re often unique to the sink and difficult to find otherwise.
Choosing the Perfect Tile: A Forest Floor Look
One of my favorite parts of the design was selecting the tile. I wanted a shade that would resemble leaves on the forest floor. After a lot of searching, I chose a beautiful green tile from Bedrosians, which brings a natural, leafy feel to the space and perfectly complements the pebble floor.
Lessons Learned: Don’t Toss Those Demoed Fixtures
One mistake we made early on was discarding demoed fixtures too quickly. In hindsight, we could have reused several items, saving us both time and money. If you’re tackling a similar project, consider storing those fixtures until you’re sure they won’t be useful!
The Final Result: An Inviting, Nature-Inspired Oasis
This cabin bathroom renovation was all about creating a unique, nature-inspired space with modern functionality. From expanding the space to adding thoughtful design elements, each choice contributed to a more immersive, relaxing experience. It’s now a space we love to unwind in and enjoy.
This project taught us valuable lessons and reminded us that sometimes, the best designs come from a blend of creativity, patience, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected. We couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!
