We Love Black Snakes & We Can Not Lie

"Betty the Black Snake" (She Likes Mice Too!)

Having a black snake on our property honestly brings us a sense of comfort. I'm not exactly sure why, but I always feel like they're quietly watching over the places we might overlook, especially when it comes to controlling rodents. Areas where we store equipment, like mowers, ATVs, and other gear, are prime spots for mice and rats to settle in. Rodents love to nestle into the hard-to-reach compartments, often causing damage by gnawing on wiring and creating a mess if left unchecked.

For almost a year, we had a particularly sneaky mouse living in our tool chest in the shed. It was completely unfazed by repellents and outsmarted every trap we put out. Then, about a month ago, I noticed "Betty" slithering toward the mower shed. From a distance, I cheered her on, hoping she'd pick up the scent of our unwelcome little guest. Just last week, I went to grab a tool from the chest, opened the box, and realized that our mouse friend was finally gone. I even double-checked that evening, but it was clear: no sign of the mouse. Thank you, Betty!

Why Black Snakes Are Beneficial for Your Property

Black snakes, like Betty, are incredibly valuable to have around the property. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Natural Pest Control: Black snakes are known to control rodent populations effectively. They prey on mice, rats, and other small pests that can invade sheds, garages, and even homes. By having a black snake around, you’re enlisting natural help to keep these pests in check without relying on toxic traps or poisons.

  2. Protection of Equipment: Rodents often cause expensive damage by chewing through wires and cables in machinery and vehicles. Black snakes help reduce the risk of this damage by keeping rodent populations down, indirectly safeguarding your equipment.

  3. Non-Venomous and Generally Harmless: Black snakes are non-venomous and not a danger to humans. They tend to be shy, keeping to themselves and steering clear of people. If you see one on your property, there's no need to worry—they’re likely just doing their job.

  4. Control of Other Snake Species: Black snakes can deter more dangerous snakes from the area. They sometimes compete with or even prey on venomous snakes like copperheads, which can help make your property a bit safer.

Having Betty around has been a natural and effective solution for our rodent problem. She’s a welcome guest on our property and has reminded us of the important balance of nature, showing how even a simple black snake can make a big difference!
